FACTS:
Six Reasons to Oppose the Death Penalty
The death penalty is racist.
The death penalty punishes the poor.
The death penalty condemns the innocent to die.
The death penalty is not a deterrent to violent crime.
The death penalty is "cruel and unusual punishment."
The death penalty fails to recognize that guilty people have the potential to change, denying them the opportunity to ever rejoin society.

CON TEAM EXAMPLE (research in internet)
FACTS:
§  The death penalty goes against our most basic human right - the right to life
§  Being killed by lethal injection or being electrocuted is not always smooth and painless, sometimes it causes a painful death
§  No-one has ever proven with numbers that killing murderers stops other people committing similar crimes
§  Mistakes are sometimes made in the law - what if someone is killed who is actually innocent?

There is a better alternative: life without parole.
In Oregon, we have the option of sentencing convicted murderers to life in prison without the possibility of parole. There are currently over 121 people in Oregon who have received this sentence.
The death penalty puts innocent lives at risk.
Since the reinstatement of the death penalty in the United States in 1976, 138 innocent men and women have been released from death row, including some who came within minutes of execution. In Missouri, Texas and Virginia investigations have been opened to determine if those states executed innocent men. To execute an innocent person is morally reprehensible; this is a risk we cannot take.

Race and place determine who lives and who dies.
Those who kill whites are more likely to be sentenced to die than those who kill African-Americans. In Oregon, prosecutors from some counties are more likely to pursue the death penalty than others are.

PRO TEAM:
FACTS:
1.    There is no way to remedy the occasional mistake.
2.    There is racial and economic discrimination in application of the death penalty.
3.    Application of the death penalty tends to be arbitrary and capricious; for similar crimes, some are sentenced to death while others are not.
4.    The death penalty gives some of the worst offenders publicity that they do not deserve.

5.     The death penalty involves medical doctors, who are sworn to preserve life, in the act of killing.

6.    Executions have a corrupting effect on the public.

7.    The death penalty cannot be limited to the worst cases.

8.     The death penalty is an expression of the absolute power of the state; abolition of that penalty is a much- needed limit on government power.

9.    There are strong religious reasons for many to oppose the death penalty

10.   Even the guilty have a right to life.

FACTS:
We need to kill the death penalty, not people. Here are 2 reasons why, any one of which could be enough.
1) Democracy. The death penalty is totalitarian. I don’t want anyone killed in my name, in our name. When the government prosecutes, convicts, sentences, and executes defendants, we the people are the plaintiff. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel famously said that in a democracy, not all are at fault, but everyone is responsible. The current system enforces that we citizens are co-responsible for our fellow citizens’ state-sanctioned murder, which is more akin to fascism than democracy. I dissent.
2) Barbarism. The death penalty is barbaric and an antiquated, regressive, “cruel and unusual” punishment. With all of our advances in the sciences, sociology, psychology, education, technology, and so on, we should have more socially-effective, non-lethal, civilized techniques to punish (and rehabilitate) criminals, while protecting the rest of society. Professor Austin Sarat estimates that “executions by lethal injection are botched at a higher rate than any of the other methods employed since the late 19th century, 7 percent.”
